From http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/01/24/AR2006012401549.html:

Arlington County and neighboring Alexandria will become the first communities in the country to experiment with sirens as alerts to terrorist attacks. They are preparing to buy as many as 15 modern sirens to mount on telephone poles, buildings and even traffic lights in a few neighborhoods in a federally funded pilot program that is being closely watched by other area governments.

Growing up around air force bases when I did, you kinda got used to these things going off once a month or so (testing, there never was an actual alert). Reportedly they haven't yet identified the specific areas they will be deployed, but I'm kinda looking forward to having one around my house. Not for any kind of personal peace of mind, but instead to see what kind of reaction the uninitiated have when they fire it up.
